US Deploys MQ-22 Swift Drone to Jordan

Military Sentinel, Amman – An ultra-long-endurance MQ-22 Swift drone operated by U.S. defense elements was tracked flying from Jordan’s Prince Hassan Air Base on September 13, marking the platform’s first confirmed operational deployment to the Middle Eastern theater.

Open-source flight tracking identified the aircraft, bearing civil registration N622VU, departing Prince Hassan Air Base (also designated H-5) near Safawi in Jordan’s northern Mafraq Governorate. The installation sits near Jordan’s tri-border region with Syria and Iraq, an area of continuous regional friction.

The flight confirms the operational forward positioning of the MQ-22 Swift (originally designated Vanilla UAS), a platform manufactured by Maryland-based Platform Aerospace designed to provide persistent surveillance over multi-day collection windows.

The airfield previously drew regional attention in July after Iranian state media claimed the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targeted hangars at H-5. Backing from the U.S. Navy which awarded Platform Aerospace a $12.9 million logistics and engineering modification earlier this year highlights the Pentagon’s growing reliance on low-cost, ultra-long-loiter platforms. Unlike larger Group 4 and 5 aircraft such as the MQ-9 Reaper, which require frequent crew rotations and refueling cycles, a single MQ-22 can maintain continuous target custody over an area for over a week.
